Traumatic Brain / Head Injuries

Our personal injury lawyers have acted for many clients that have suffered from traumatic brain injuries / head injuries arising from motor vehicle accidents, sporting accidents and slip and falls.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) occurs when an external force impacts the brain. TBI can be classified as mild, moderate and severe. A Head injury can be referred to as a TBI, but is a broader category as it can involve damage to structures other than the brain, such as the scalp and skull.

Symptoms include headache, vomiting, nausea, lack of motor coordination, dizziness, difficulty balancing, lightheadedness, blurred vision or tired eyes, ringing in the ears, bad taste in the mouth, fatigue or lethargy, changes in sleep patterns, confusion, trouble with memory, concentration, attention, or thinking, mood changes as well as impaired social behaviour. TBI can cause negative physical, cognitive, social, emotional, and behavioural problems.

Motor vehicle accidents are a significant cause of TBI’s. Brain trauma can occur as a consequence of an impact upon the head, by a sudden acceleration/deceleration within the skull or by a complex combination of both movement and sudden impact.

Depending on the injury, treatment required may be minimal or may extend to medications, surgery, physical therapy, speech therapy, recreation therapy, and occupational therapy.
